in General

If you really want to view the UK and all it has to show, the ideal way is on four wheels. Driving through England means traveling at your desired speed and selecting your itinerary yourself. This itinerary gives a journey from your cheap hotel deals in Brighton to the UK’s North East, and it could have you watering at the mouth. I’ve chosen this journey due to the way the landscape shifts, from sea to sea and city to village.

1st Day- Begin in the southern coastal area of Brighton. Brighton is a colorful city with a Pavilion, showgrounds and pier. Exit the hotel one morning and head along the coast on the A27. A great place to stop for lunch is Portsmouth, that has a famous Spinnaker Tower along with all the fantastic restaurants in Gunwharf Quays. Get back on the road and take it until Southampton, from which you’ll switch to the A36. This road will lead you to the historic town of Salisbury, that has an impressive medieval castle.

2nd Day- Exit Salisbury on the A360 and change to the A303. On this route you’ll be lead to a site all must see once, the strange and striking Stonehenge. After this, you’ll travel west, pass Warminster, and get into Bath. Bath holds some of the remains of the Roman baths, consisting of the UK’s finest historical architecture. After this, take the A46 and A433 north until you end up in the Cotswolds. Tetbury and Cirencester are two towns that have plenty of nice motels and budget hotel chains for the night’s rest.

3rd Day- Today, you’ll make the trip to Coventry. On the way, you’ll hold and see two of England’s greatest sights. First, you’ll take the A429 and rest along the way at Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Head north on the A46, and then stop at the fantastic Warwick’s castle. Don’t forget to have time to see the wonderful cathedral at Coventry.

Day Four- From exiting your hotel at Coventry, head north on the M69 and after this the M1. You can stop at the odd sight of Chesterfield’s crooked spire. From here, go west up to the tiny town of Bakewell, situated in the Peak District. An additional choice is to travel north to the active town of Sheffield, which has many excellent hotels.

5th Day- Continue going north via the M1 and you’ll pass Leeds. After a quick stop there, get on the A64. This will bring you to a historic town of York, where you can enjoy shopping through the labyrinthine streets with old fashioned shops, have a look at the Minister and walk along the old city walls. York has a lovely park-and-ride service for visitors, since the city really doesn’t give a lot by way of parking facilities. If you’ve still got some daylight, you can head northeast up to Pickering, famous for its North York Motors steam railway which you can ride. Otherwise, you can stay at any of the wonderful hotels in York.

Day Six- Now, you’ll be nearing the coastline. Take the A170 and you’ll come to Scarborough, an old fashioned fishing town smack bang on the coast. Scarborough has an old castle sitting right at the headlands, and this is a great place to hold up for a fish and chips lunch. Get on the A171 and you’ll come to the amazing cliffside city called Robin’s Hood Bay. Stay in one of the sweet quaint hotels at the hill’s top; the lanes at the sea level are very narrow, so driving through there is not recommended.

Day Seven- Stay on the A171 by the coast and soon you’ll be at Whitby. It’s a pretty town with a busy harbor, small side streets along with an old gothic abbey. You’ve reached the end of the trip! Okay, you can take your car to the local branch of your rental car agency, or you can drive back to Brighton and enjoy the the sights on the voyage back!
