Frensham Ponds are within Frensham Common and are situated in the heart of the Surrey countryside, south of Farnham in an area of stunning open heathland.
Frensham Common is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Frensham Ponds are in the middle of the great Frensham Common are made up of Frensham Great Pond and Frensham Little Pond. Frensham Common and Great Pond are leased to Waverley Borough by the National Trust who manage the area. Frensham Little Pond is owned and managed by the English National Trust.
The Great Frensham Pond is popular with sailing and fishing but these activities are limited to the members of Farnham Angling Society and Frensham Sailing Club. The banks of the Great Pond are sandy making it a beautiful inland beach. In the spring and summer months the Great Pond is particularly popular with tourists and families, who come to sunbathe, enjoy a picnic, build sandcastles and swim in the calm waters. Two swimming areas with maximum depths of 1.4 meters and 1.2 are marked off by white buoys.
The little pond within Frensham Ponds covers an area of nearly 136 acres of heathland and open water, which provides a haven for animals and plants. Frensham Little Pond is made by man and was built in the Middle Ages to supply fish to the Bishop of Winchester’s court when visiting Farnham Castle and was also drained on a five year cycle to cleanse the soil and grow barley for brewing. Interestingly, both ponds were drained in the Second World War to confuse enemy aircraft and were also used for tank training exercises until they were filled again in 1949. Today, recreational activities such as swimming and sailing are only permitted at the Great Pond but you can still enjoy the natural habitat by walking around Frensham Little Pondand when finished, why not relax in the great restaurant farnham.
