Are you looking for something different for your annual vacation? Have you taken a look at visiting Scotland? Have you ever stayed on a remote island? In the article below I  examine the Isle of Skye found off Scotland’s west coast.

The breathtaking Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland is an immensely popular destination for vacations and short breaks. Usually associated with older tourists the island is renowned the world over for it’s most incredible scenery and the most obvious aspect is the imposing sight of the Black Cuillins.

The Black Cuillins are a ridge of mountains which have rocks from all three periods of geology; Cretaceous, Triassic and Jurassic, obviously the mountains are greatly popular with both geologists and folk on the lookout for fossils plus mountain climbers, ramblers, hikers, hill-walkers.

The mountain tops of Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir provide the most striking views. Skye’s easiest munro to climb (a munro is a Scottish mountain which is more than three thousand feet) is Bruach na Frithe. The most difficult is Basteir Tooth. Sgurr Beag is also an easy climb but you may find Sgurr Na h-Uarma a moderate climb.

The vast majority of folk set off from Sligachan because it is approximately 3km from there to the start of the Cuillin mountains.

Safety In The Cuillins

Alarmingly, each year, far too many hikers (including a fair few experienced mountaineers) end up in  difficulty. The weather on the Isle of Skye can change extremely quickly, one minute you are being warmed by the sun and the next you can find yourself being pounded heavily by icy cold winds.

The one thing which is crucial to do, is to check the local weather forecast. The information is on display at Tourist Information Centres across the island. These are found at the following places: 2 Lochside in Dunvegan, Bayfield Road in Portree and the car park in Broadford.

The Tourist Information Centres produce a useful brochure concerning safety measure to take in the Cuillins which is very worthwhile completing. You can not fail to see it because it is coloured bright orange. When you have filled in the form leave it in the hands of a person who is responsible who isn’t going with you.

Skye Accommodation

As I said earlier the island is intensely popular so finding Isle of Skye bed & breakfast is very difficult during the summer season. If you fancy the idea of a climbing vacation on Skye it is vitally important that you book your Skye bed and breakfast as early as possible.
