The country of Scotland, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, is an incredible destination to have a vacation featuring a fine choice of tourist attractions including some of the finest galleries and museums in the whole of Great Britain,  perfect countryside for mountain climbers, ramblers, hill-walkers, hikers and the likes as well as a huge collection of historical buildings, country houses, castles and fortified houses.  Below I talk about the island of Arran and describe why this is such a superb place to take a vacation.

The Isle of Arran is the seventh largest island in Scotland and even though Arran is often classed as part of the Hebrides it is in fact located in the Firth of Clyde which is further south. Because tourism is the main industry on the island it will not surprise you that there is an incredible number of hotels on Arran. Although most people take vacations on the island to enjoy the breathtaking countryside the island also has a respectable number of tourist attractions including; Brodick Castle Gardens, Arran Transport Museum, Arran Heritage Museum and Kildonan Castle.

There are a number of population centres, the “capital” is Brodick, where you will find the ferry terminal where you can sail to Ardrossan on the Scottish mainland. Lamlash, situated 4 miles south of Brodick, is the point of departure to Holy Island.

Lochranza is largest population centre in the northern half of the island and will find the ferry terminal where you can sail to Claonaig in Southern Argyll. It is important to note that the ferry only sails in the summer months. The village is set in a large, and very pretty, bay with the ruins of Lochranza Castle being the most popular attraction.

The village of Blackwaterfoot is the largest on the west coast of Arran. It features a public house (bar), a small harbour and a garage (including a petrol station). Other places worth visiting are; Catacol (in the north), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Kilmory (south coast), Corrie (north of Brodick) and finally Pirnmill Arran’s most beautiful beach.

If you are planning a vacation in Scotland and you are looking for Arran hotels please take a look at our listings of Arran bed and breakfast.
