The Lake District is the most popular holiday destination in the north of England. In the past it was where only people interested in outdoor activities headed, popular for its mountains, or fells as they are known locally and lakes. This continues to be true, however today it is also popular with visitors seeking a more sedate relaxing break and with those interested in its literary connections with the 19th century writers and poets such as Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth.
Wordsworth and his family spent much of their lives close to the lakes and there are a considerable number of places for visitors with an interest in his life to visit, amongst them Dove Cottage in Grasmere and Rydal Mount. Rydal is the site of ‘Dora’s Field’ where Wordsworth intended to build a home for his family, the house was never built and when his daughter died Wordsworth and his family planted the site with daffodils and named it after her. The field is now owned but the National Trust, but if you visit here in the spring you will be rewarded with a magnificent sight of thousands of daffodils in flower, perhaps it would be the place to recite his most famous piece .

There are of course a great number of other places in the Lake District to visit; amongst the most popular is the market town of Keswick. Situated right on the shores of Derwent Water, Keswick has become a great place as a base for exploring the northern lakes of the Lake District National Park. The area is great for both relaxing and exhilarating activities for all ages and from here it is possible to explore the mountains of Skiddaw and Scarfell Pike, the surrounding towns and villages as well as the beautiful lakes.
